The
social marketing in public health certificate program
is offered to experienced health educators or other
public health professionals who wish to develop the
skills needed to develop, implement and evaluate social
marketing programs. The certificate program emphasizes
the translation of theory and knowledge into evidence-based
practice.
The
University
of
South Florida
,
College
of
Public Health
, has been a leader in social
marketing in public health for over 10 years. Each
year, USF hosts an international conference in social marketing and
public health, which has drawn over 3,500 participants
during the past 11 years, and a
Social
Marketing
Field
School
. The
University
of
South
Florida
also houses a CDC funded
Prevention
Research
Center
which
is developing a community-based approach to social marketing.
The
certificate program has been developed for the following
groups:

Public/community
health educators prepared
at the masters level (minimally);
-
Graduate
students enrolled in public health programs that are pursuing a public health education or health-related
careers;
-
Public health
educators who are employed in local, state and federal public
health agencies that
have education and experience in public health education
(minimum of 3 years public/community health practice); and
-
Other individuals
who may be interested in completing the certificate program
include public
health program planners and administrators working
at local, state and federal levels.
Course
and Credit Hours
Eighteen (18) credit hours are required for completion of the
Certificate.
Required Courses (9 credit hours)
- PHC 6411 Introduction
to Social Marketing for Public Health
(3 credits)
- PHC 6705 Formative Research
Methods in Social Marketing
(3 credits)
And select one of the following
three courses:
- PHC 6934 Marketing for
Non-Profit Organizations (2 or 3 credits)
- PHC 6148 Strategic Planning
and Health Care Marketing (3 credits)
- PAD 6934 Public and
Nonprofit Marketing and Communications
(3 credits)
Electives
(9 credit hours)-selected with program advisor. Electives will be selected based on student's experience and career
goals/plans. Examples of
elective courses suggested for the target audience are:
Focus Group Research; Public Health Message Design; and
Qualitative Methods in Community Health Research.
